Iron Man 3 Casting News

There has been a lot of news lately about Iron Man 3 so we thought we would recap what has been said so far.

First up is the a recap on the fact that Jon Favreau is not directing and the big chair has gone to Shane Black who has also been doubling up with the screen writing duties. This is no bad thing guys because Shane Black has done some the coolest movies back in the 80’s and 90’s and 00’s. He is well liked in the industry and respected. He has worked with Robert Downey Jr before on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

The story is pretty much confirmed as being based on the Extremis storyline from 2005 and was written by Warren Ellis with art by Adi Granov. Without giving away too much of the plot, the story sort of redefined the origin story but also made some big changes for Iron Man. I can see how Shane Black could make this a very cool and interesting movie.

Casting news has been coming very quick recently but confirmed to come back are Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Not confirmed are Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow or Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson (!)

The recently added or rumored new members are Sir Ben Kingsley who is belived to be playing the Mandarin. Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian and lastly Jessica Chastain who could be playing Dr. Maya Hansen. So the last two characters are a major part of the Extremis storyline but if Ben Kingsley is playing the Mandarin then this is something new as that was never part of Extremis.

All that being said the film is shaping very nicely after what was the underwhelming Iron Man 2.

The film is due to be released in May 2013

  1. Last I heard, Ben Kingsley was in talks to play the main villain and that it most definitely was not the mandarin although looking at him, it would have been a perfect casting decision

  2. Yes, I will be very truly sad if there is no sight of some version of THE MANDARIN at all, that will be such a total loss. Agreed, Kingsley does look just like a real kind of Mandarin could, although him not being of actual oriental or Asian origin would possible make that very politically incorrect and culturally difficult, or offensive. So his being included is most likely around the Extremis story line, but what’s to say the writers won’t be meshing together a few storylines for an interesting unpredictable result?
