Is Microsoft Watching You

People have been speculating that Microsoft is using it’s Kinect camera for purposes other then allowing you to play games without a controller. Rumour suggest they are using the camera to determine who is in the room when you are playing a game or watching a film.

Why would Microsoft do this? Well they could use the data to target advertising to the people sat in front of the Xbox at any given moment. Imagine a room full of mid 20’s guys watching the latest action film from the video marketplace, well before the movie starts the Xbox could show a advert for the next Call of Duty game, or imagine  a group of 14 year old girls could be playing a dancing game then the Xbox could show a advert for the next Tween movie coming to the video market place.

Since these rumours have been around Microsoft has had to respond with this statement sent to The Wall Street Journal:

“Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE do not use any information captured by Kinect for advertising targeting purposes. Microsoft has a strong track record of implementing some of the best privacy protection measures in the industry. We place great importance on the privacy of our customers’ information and the safety of their experiences.”

So they’re currently not using it to “spy” on it’s users but who knows what’ll happen in the future. I don’t think they ever will because of the massive negative PR they would receive if it was revealed they we’re watching you through the camera.

One things for sure though! No more naked Halo: Reach for me!
