Long Live The Nu Flesh!!: Videodrome To Be Remade.

From Variety

Universal Pictures will remake the 1983 David Cronenberg-directed thriller “Videodrome,” with Ehren Kruger set to write the script and produce with partner Daniel Bobker.

The producers tracked down the rights to Canadian distribution vet Rene Malo, who will be exec producer. Universal distributed the original and had first refusal on a remake, and the studio snapped up the opportunity.

The original “Videodrome” starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming “Videodrome,” a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers.

The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.

Why?

I don’t ask that in a way that everyone asks when another piece of news about remakes come up. I can see this movie being remake on pure technical terms. The messages it conveys is still prevalent. Why would you turn something really surreal and thought provoking….into an empty kicksplode sci-fi flick? I don’t get that. The themes are too deep for exploding cars and ninjas.

Having Ehren Kruger on the job is also bad news.. This is a guy who tried to get rid of the “natural communication vs. electronic communication” techno horror angle of The Ring and replace it with a ham-handed gay acceptance ghost story. Gore Verbinski was smart enough to at least postpone that idea for the sequel. This is the last guy I would put on a project like this. Even the hint about nano tech being added to the story shows that Kruger can’t get his mind around the idea of using television desensitization to make one susceptible to hypnotic suggestion and control them. Where does  nano tech fit?

I think the only positive out of this is that we won’t be seeing people BAMFing into werewolves.
