Lucy Liu Joins CBS’ Sherlock Holmes TV Show as Watson

So ‘Elementary’, the pilot for a US TV show that is modern day take on Sherlock Holmes, has now found their Watson.

I would love to have been shocked by this gender twist casting news but sorry CBS I’m not. I knew that Watson was more than likely going to be a woman, though I’m glad to see Lucy Liu in the role of the long suffering but ever faithful Watson. To be honest I’m more interested in some of the other tidbits that are starting to come out about the show.

The project, written by Robert Doherty, is set in present day and stars Jonny Lee Miller as eccentric Brit Sherlock Holmes, a former consultant to Scotland Yard whose addiction problems led him to a rehab center in New York City. Just out of rehab, Holmes now lives in Brooklyn with “sober companion” Joan Watson (Liu), a former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died, while consulting for the NYPD.  – Deadline

I may be in the minority but I think if handled right  that two modern day Sherlock Holmes reboots can happily c0-exist. I do think ‘Elementary’ is a bit of naff title but a poor title does not a bad show make.

I loved Eli Stone so I’m happy with Johnny Lee Miller in the title role and the idea of him as a consultant fresh out of rehab. What I’m less happy about is the casting of a female Watson raises the possibility of the tired (well for me anyway) plot point of the ‘will they, won’t they’ idea that seems to exist in just about every cop show with a male and female lead. It would be a nice twist if that did not happen here.

I wonder how they will tackle Professor Moriarty if the show gets picked up for a full season as odds on he’ll get a mention in there somewhere.

What do you lot think?
