Marvel Mutterings: Ant-Man, Fantastic Four, Mandarin & SHIELD

Whether it’s Fox, Sony or the Marvel stable themselves, here are the world-wide witterings!

This week: A Gecko goes Ant-Man, Not the Fantastic Four are DOOMED, The Mandarin’s got One-Shot and Agents of SHIELD get a 4-episode genuine genre-icon guest-star!

Not the Fantastic Four: Last year at Stan Lee’s Comikaze, I caught the crowd funded story behind the story of the unmade Nick Cage / Tim Burton Superman Reborn film. This new trailer for the Fantastic Four documentary DOOMED! explains what became of B-movie king Roger Corman’s lost The Fantastic Four film:

The Mandarin: The first pictures are out for the latest Marvel One-Shot feature – (Sir) Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin appears at Seagate Prison in Marvel’s Hail To The King.

Hail To The King will appear on the Thor: The Dark World DVD and Blu-ray, coming 25 February

Ant-Man: Much mystery has been surrounding Edgar Wright’s forthcoming Marvel movie, as to which guise the lead character would have – Hank Pym or Scott Lang? Well the answer would appear to be both: as Hollywood heavyweight Michael Douglas has been cast as Hank Pym, thus confirming Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, the thief who lifts the technology from Pym and subsequently becomes the miniscule hero.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said in a statement, “With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”

So, Thor had Anthony Hopkins. Iron Man 3 had Ben Kingsley. Captain America: The Winter Soldier has Robert Redford. Marvel appears to have developed a taste for drafting in the sort of Hollywood royalty who win Oscars – although to be fair, DC / Warner have been using Russell Crowe, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Costner and Michael Caine…

Ant-Man will br released by Disney on Friday 14 August 2015.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Agents of SHIELD are casting veteran genre character actor Bill Paxton (Aliens, Near Dark, Terminator, Predator 2, Thunderbirds, Slipstream… phew!) as Agent John Garrett, a character created by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz, now an old colleague of Phil Coulson’s, for at least four episodes. Showrunner Jed Whedon said that Paxton can be expected to inject some of his trademark swagger to the show. “We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger. When Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two.” Fellow showrunner Maurissa Tanchareon says that Garrett “comes into the fold in a very surprising way. He is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets.” I’m a huge fan of Paxton – back in the day he would have been perfect as Deadpool because he tends to play characters with a lot of confidence and a real mouth on them – hopefully he can inject some real character into S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s current roster.
