MCM London 23rd-25th October 2015 – Day 1 round up
The opening day of MCM started grey and cold but the event itself so far is by no means dull. October MCM is usually quieter than in May, the colder weather putting some people off. Opening day is also always a little quieter, which makes for a much more relaxed day of mooching and people watching. This GS Blogger has managed to catch the lergy but that didn’t deter her from donning the first of 3 costumes this weekend and braving the crowds and the cold. Snotty nose and sore throat be damned – this is the last Con of the season so I powered up on flu medicine and got stuck in.
Cons for me are mainly about Comic Village and artist alley. It’s a great place to find new comics that aren’t available that widely available outside of conventions unless you know where to look, and it’s always really nice to chat to the artists in person: not something that’s always possible when it comes to the big name artists. Day 1 of Con for me is about getting to know the lay of the land and noting down the artists that I want to go back and chat to over the next 2 days. The Comic Village and artists section seems slightly bigger than usual this time, which could be down to the crowds being smaller so the venue has more room to fit more tables in. Either way, it’s going to be a busy couple of days for me getting to chat to up and coming artists. My wallet is also going to hate me, as are my already overflowing bookshelves back at home. Oops.
The very lovely usual suspects were in attendance today such as Jess Bradley & Squid Bits, Lee Bradley and Gary Erskine, along with other familiar faces. And lots of new faces that I shall definitely be visiting over the rest of the weekend.
The Cosplay game was strong for opening day, something that surprised me a little, but in a good way. Opening day is usually civvies day as everyone figures out where everything is and plans the rest of their weekend. I’m a little ashamed to say that I didn’t recognise a lot of the costumes, but that could be because there was a huge anime contingent there today. And I don’t watch anime (sorry!). I shall be in full Mockingbird costume tomorrow so I hope to see more fellow Marvelites during the day. I’d also like to do a spot of name dropping if I may and mention that Neil Gaiman himself has approved of myself and my friend’s The Endless costumes today. Feeling pretty chuffed about that!
Lets also talk food. Food glorious food! Each MCM seems to have a bigger and bigger food section, which is fine by me seeing as food is my second love after Hawkeye. There is a huge food section this weekend ranging from American candy to fresh, hot Japanese cuisine. And it all smells delicious. I have to give a special shout out to the guys on The Custom Cupcake Company stand. Their brownies are absolute filth as well as the cupcakes being sparkly as all get out. And the nice man on the stall said that I looked amazing for 35 so yes, I’m giving them a special mention. Seriously though, go buy one of their brownies if you’re at MCM this weekend.
Last but not least before I close my round-up of day 1, as I was browsing through the official show guide with a cup of tea after getting back to the hotel, I spotted that my review for Geek Syndicate of Unearth has been quoted. If you haven’t already picked up a copy, then swing by and get one this weekend.
Now, this weary blogger is going to make another well-known cold & flu drink, put on her Captain America onesie and curl up in bed before the madness all begins again tomorrow.
