Merlin – Episode 2: Valiant TV Review

What’s it about?

Camelot is hosting its annual sword tournament and knights from throughout the realm have come to compete for its coveted title. Among those hoping to win the crown is Knight Valiant. Armed with a magical shield, Valiant will stop at nothing to win his prize. Merlin tries to expose Valiant as a cheat, but even those closest to him do not believe his claims.

Battling with his faith, friendships and destiny, Merlin attempts to stop Valiant’s evil scheme before Arthur becomes the next knight to die by his shield.

Review it

Well with episode 2 out of the way I can still say that I’m enjoying this series. Sure it’s made some major changes from the myths that surround Merlin but I can live with that. The story of Arthut and Merlin has been told so many times that giving it a different spin isn’t going to bother me too much. Besides I can always pop in my Excalibur dvd if things take a turn for the worst as this season goes on.

We get to see more of Arthur in this episode and in that I mean more of the man he will become. The realtionship between Uther and Arthur is also explored and I think it’s being handled well. I hope I see more interactions between the two as the series continues. I’m also enjoying the fragile friendship between Arthur and Merlin. I think by the end of episode 2 Merlin begins to see more of Arthur and that being a prince of Camelot does have it’s downside.

The plot overall was ok not great as there wasn’t anything I did not see coming. Despite it’s predictability the story was handled well and there was some great action during the tournament scenes and some good character interaction.

The one thing which is top notch in this show is the music. I have to give large props to whoever does the music. If they ever bring out an album for this show I’m all over it.

This series is not blowing me away or making me think this is how you do a fantasy series but it’s great , Saturday evening, family viewing which makes a change from the latest dire reality show.

Stars: 3.5 out of 5

Dry slaps: .5 for the predictability of the plot It really should be 1 but this is Saturday family viewing so I think it’s more about the fun than the plot.

  1. Yes – I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the series so far and it’s been good to actually have something to watch on a saturday night for a change! The characters are endearing, the script is funny, and the action is really well shot. I’d rate it 5 since I think it’s one of the best series I’ve watched for a very long time!
