Metalocalypse Season 2 DVD Review

Revolver Entertainment are proud to present the DVD release of the brutally metal Adult Swim show, Metalocalypse Season 2. Over 5 hours of metal mayhem will be available on DVD October 11th, at £19.99 RRP.

Metalocalypse is currently showing on FX on Saturday nights to over 19,000 viewers.

Metalocalypse is an animated comedy series that follows the on and off-stage adventures of Dethklok, the world’s most popular and heaviest metal band – so popular that thousands of fans will travel to a remote area of Scandanavia to hear them perform a a jingle for a coffee company.

The Metalocalypse looms over us all like a furious python waiting to attack. Like a large expertly wielded hammer ready to pound and crush us all into a rotten bloody paste. But another danger has revealed itself. The ‘Revengencers’ seek to destroy. They crawl from a putrid sludge to force a horrid tempest onto the lives of our beloved DETHKLOK. And Dethklok is faced with more brutality. The brutality of weight loss, weddings and sobriety – and the brutality of a rock ‘n’ roll clown.

The brilliance and scathing social criticism of METALOCALYPSE scorns the weak-minded and empowers free thinkers, making this the most dangerous programme in the history of television. Beware.

Loaded with 1 krillion super cool zazz-filled metal dildo features including hidden backstories, music videos, interviews and deleted scenes.

I recently had the “pleasure” of watching season 2 of this Adult Swim cartoon and it’s safe to say I most definitely was not the intended audience. I really struggled to get through the whole series.

The story revolves s around Heavy Metal band named Dethklok, who are the most famous metal band in the world. But for some reason whenever they have a concert 1000’s of people die in the most horrific ways. This happens because there music supposed to be so awesome it causes natural disasters. Now I’m not a metal fan, I prefer to be able to understand what is being sung about, but I have been informed by a friend of mind that enjoys Metal that the music in the program is great.

Obviously since this is a cartoon where the Heavy Metal band is the “good guys” then of course the “bad guys” are the establishment! In this case a senator and his group of advisers that sole mission in life is to stop Dethklok. The scenes with these characters were the best overall mostly due to the voice acting of Mark Hamill and Malcolm Mcdowell who play evil so well!

The scenes that feature the band are where this cartoon lost me, the voice acting is just atrocious! I have no idea what any of them are saying. They all have different accents/speech patterns some of which sound vaguely European. When they stand there having a conversation I was lucky to catch half of it. There are also scenes where the band is just repeating the same thing over and over again for what I assume is comedic reason. Once again I had to speak to my friend who likes this show and he assures me he finds it hilarious.

I was also immediately turned off by the graphic nature of the scenes where anyone was killed, you see people melted by lava, set of fire, stabbed, shot, ripped to pieces, have their skin stripped off and many other grotesque methods. Now I’m all for graphic gore, I love gore flicks, however when it is used every 30 seconds it just becomes silly. This program lacks any kind of class.

The coy of the DVD i had didn’t have any special features on but according to the press release above the retail DVD will be “Loaded with 1 krillion super cool zazz-filled metal dildo features including hidden backstories, music videos, interviews and deleted scenes.”

As you can probably tell I didn’t really care for this cartoon, but then I am definitely NOT the intended audience. I hate Metal music, and since it takes up 90% of this show I was never going to be a fan. However my friend who is a 17 year old metal fan absolutely loves this cartoon. So all I can say is that if you like metal music and gore porn then you will absolutely love this, if you don’t like those things then I would advise you give it a miss.

Out of 5 I have to give this a 1, but in the interest of fairness I asked my friend how he would score it and he gave it a score of 4.5 out of 5.

In closing all I can say is that this show is aimed at a very small section of society, if you fall into that small section then go out and by this on Monday when it’s released.
