Microsoft Acquires Gears Of War Rights from Epic Games

Microsoft has announced that they have acquired the rights to the Xbox exclusive Gears Of War franchise from series creator Epic GamesMicrosoft  also announced that Black Tusk studio, based in Vancouver, will take over development of the series. To support the studio Microsoft have brought on-board be Rod Fergusson, the former Epic Games executive producer and director of production who oversaw the first three games in the Gears of War series. Fergusson had also worked on Bioshock Infinite after leaving Epic to work for Irrational Games but left the studio after Bioshock Infinite was released. He also previously work for Microsoft for 10 years from 1996 so is well know to the company.

Black Tusk Studios was formally know as  Microsoft Vancouver  before being rebranded. Black Tusk’s General Manager, Hanno Lemke said the studio will collaborate closely with Epic “to ensure the inclusion of the Unreal Engine technology into the Gears of War franchise going forward remains consistent with the high quality fans have come to expect from the franchise.”

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said in a statement that the sale of the Gears franchises would allow the Unreal Engine studio to concentrate on “new projects”. “Epic remains totally dedicated to supporting Xbox One and is licensing the Unreal Engine 4 technology to Microsoft in support of their future projects.”
