New Coursera MOOC: Comic Books and Graphic Novels

coursera-logoThink you know about comics? Think you understand graphic novels? Or just want to expand your comic book horizons? Have we got the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for you!

MOOCs are big news in the world of further education. Coursera is the biggest supplier of MOOCs at the moment and features courses from many of the major US Universities, including Stanford University, Princeton, the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania.

On 23 September, Prof. William Kuskin (Professor of English and Chair, English Department at the University of Colorado) kicks off his course “Comic Books and Graphic Novels.” This MOOC is a distance learning course which features videos, assessments and peer-review. The course “presents a survey of the comic book canon and of the major graphic novels in circulation today. Its governing question is simple: by what terms can we discuss comic books as literary art?”

So, what can you expect? A survey of American comics. A debate on their literary merits. An exploration of the various comic book ages. A look at Maus, Persepolis, Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Ultimates, Building Stories and more. What’s not to like?

If you have a burning desire to learn more about comics and can spare 3-4 hours a week for 7 weeks from 2 Sept, sign up now. Find out all about it https://www.coursera.org/course/comics
