NEW MARVEL APES MIKE WIERINGO VARIANT COVER TO BENEFIT HERO INITIATIVE

Thanks to the guys over at the Hero Initiative for sending in this press release regarding a new variant cover penciled by the late Mike Wieringo. I had never heard about Marvel Apes until now and that name Daregorilla, the Ape without fear just cracks me the hell up! Not sure if the premise is my sort of thing but I may at least check out the first issue to see what it’s about.

Daregorilla, the Ape Without Fear, penciled before Mike’s passing

LOS ANGELES (September 10, 2008) – Marvel Comics’ popular Marvel Apes series is already swinging into comic stores, and it now has a new variant cover penciled by the late Mike Wieringo.

The Hero Initiative’s Marvel Apes #1 variant is limited to only 3000 copies worldwide and available NOW at www.AtomicComics.com . Retail price is $8, and the book will also be available at the Hero Initiative booth at the Baltimore Comic-Con (Sep. 27-28), Mid-Ohio Con (Oct. 4-5), Adventure Con (Oct. 25-26) and Wizard World Texas (Nov. 7-9).

Marvel Apes writer and cover inker Karl Kesel said, “It was a blast working on Marvel Apes-one of the most far-out, fun assignments I’ve ever had! And inking Mike Wieringo’s ‘Daregorilla’ variant cover only made it better. This drawing is one of the initial inspirations for the entire mini-series-chances are the comic would have never happened without it-so this cover brings everything full circle. And it’s only fitting that it helps The Hero Initiative, because Mike was a big believer in giving back to the comics community, and that’s exactly what The Hero Initiative is all about.”

As with Marvel Zombies before it, Marvel Apes is a limited series that takes place in an alternate universe, in this case, one populated with simian versions of popular Marvel Super Heroes.

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need.  Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.  For more information, call 310-909-7809 or visit www.HeroInitiative.org.
