New ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Movie Poster

This week we heard that the first and quite frankly best Indiana Jones movie is coming to IMAX in September. To mark this Drew Struzan who has created some of the best movie posters ever, has released a brand new one for Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Director Steven Spielberg also had this to say about the re-release:

“I didn’t know if the 1981 print would stand up to a full IMAX transfer, so I came expecting a sort of grainy, muddy, and overly enlarged representation of the movie I had made [31] years ago,” Spielberg told Yahoo. “And I was blown away by the fact that it looked better than the movie I had made [31] years ago.”

Now for a larger version of the poster. For me Struzan is one of the few people who can capture the spirit of a film in just one painting. What do you think?

UPDATE: So it seems that this is not a Drew Struzan artwork and sorry for saying so. So my next task is to find out just who did this artwork. Any clues let us know…

Its not Drew Struzan.. Not even signed “DREW”

    • montoc1701 /

Hey Dave. You could be right. The source said it was Drew but the signature at the bottom is not Drew. Well spotted and I will update the post. Is this The Dave Dorman?

      • Dave /

yeah it is “the Dave” lol.. (like the “Donald”?) There were a few tell tail signs in the rendering that just weren’t right for a Drew piece. the Artist caught the feel but not the details.. or the passion. A nice piece, but not quite the boat.

  2. Hi Montoc1701 — Sorry that you and Dave don’t feel it quite hits the mark, but I deeply respect you for your views and for saying so.

I am the artist and given that Drew and Amsel are THE Indy artists, I tread as carefully and respectfully as I could while at the same time, endeavouring to create something that was unique to my vision and artistic taste. I’m happy to report that the reaction to this poster has been overwhelmingly positive – which is an honour.

My name is Mark Raats. I hope this helps some

    • Hey Mark, thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment! This is Barry here and I’m one of the co-founders of Geek Syndicate. I’m also probably the hugest fan of Indiana Jones on the geek syndicate team (I’m the one the Geek Syndicate banner doing the bad Indy impression). Anyway I just wanted to pop in and say I think the poster looks fantastic mate and really caught the look of Indy for me. I also really liked the spear of destiny poster and some of the other Indy posters you’ve got on your website.

Keep up the great Indy work!

      • Hi Barry —

Cheers for the kind words mate and its great to put a name with a web site. I know GeekSyndicate and actually I always thought the banner (with you) was especially cool!

I’m delighted you like the IMAX poster and in all honesty, we (Lucasfilm, Paramount and I) have been caught off guard by the overwhelmingly positive response to the art so, its very hard for me to complain…

Thanks for the virtual thumbs up for the Spear piece. Although I’m not 100% happy with it, that art certainly ranks up there amongst my favourite pieces simply because it explores new ground with an older Jones.

Take it easy and thanks again for the note – warmly appreciated to be sure…

      • Hey Mark, always cool to hear from folks who have been visiting our little site and glad you like the banner. We love it! 😀

Looking at your Spear of Destiny piece I don’t know if you’ve read any of the Indiana Jonces comics but there was a four part series where Indy was after the spear.

Oh and if you into Indy style adventure check my other website Unseen Shadows which is all based around my modern day pulp adventure novel Fallen Heroes. You can check that out at

        Shameless plug over…Take care mate!
