Notes from Nuge – Upcoming Movie Scores

Greetings all Montoya here

As we are heading into a year full of great genre movies I thought I would just give you an update on the soundtracks heading your way.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The sequel to 2008’s fun family movie Journey to the Center of the Earth has confirmed that the original film’s composer will return for the sequel. Andrew Lockington also composed the scores for City of Ember and the many episodes of the TV series Sanctuary. The sequel stars the returning Josh Hutcherson and new comers Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens and Michael Caine.

Thor. Patrick Doyle’s has been confirmed as the composer on the Marvel Studios movie about the God of Thunder. Doyle has previously worked with Director Kenneth Branagh on Henry V, but has also worked on Eragon, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Igor. This score needs to deliver and be iconic so fingers crossed.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The fourth entry in the franchise is once again being composed by Hans Zimmer. I love Zimmer’s music and have bought nearly every one he has ever done. The first pirates movie score was amazing but the last 2 were mostly unforgettable. This time Zimmer is joined by Arturo Sandoval a jazz musician who will hopefully bring a new flare to the latest film.

Captain America: The First Avenger. As previously reported here on Geek Syndicate, the Marvel movie has confirmed Alan Silvestri to be on lead music duties. This is great news as Silvestri has done some great scores in the past including one of my all time favourites Back to the Future. A veteran of over 30 genre films covering Predator, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Night at the Museum.

Final Destination 5. Yep there’s going to be another film about teens cheating death. Hey don’t look at me it was you guys who all went to the cinema to see The Final Destination so the studios saw money signs there. Anyway it is being scored by Brian Tyler who has a track record of full on action films. In the past he has scored Rambo, Bangkok Dangerous, The Expendables and even the new rebooted Hawaii Five-0.

Green Lantern. The latest attempt by DC comics/Warner Bros to kick start one of their comic book heroes comes out in June and leading the music is acclaimed composer James Newton Howard. No stranger to the genre Newton has composed some of the best scores in the last decade from The Dark Knight right through to King Kong. Judging by the trailer this movie needs all the help it can get.

Until next time geeks.
