NYCC 2017: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Cast & Creator with a look at Season 5

After having skipped San Diego Comic Con this year for the first time since the summer before the show premiered, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast & Executive Producer Jeph Loeb were at this years New York Comic Con (NYCC) eager to prepare fans for what to expect from their much anticipated series 5.

Of course, Marvel Television is notorious for its secret keeping, and one goes into any of their press rooms prepared to have a lot of “we can’t tell you” answers to your questions. This time around, it seemed that even the cast were unaware of what they actually could say, as evidenced by our first interview with the actors from what is arguably the most popular ship on the show, Fitzsimmons, Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma Simmons) and Iain De Caestecker (Leo Fitz). Luckily, EP Jeph Loeb was close at hand so that Henstridge could confirm their talking points, and tell us that Fitzsimmons are once again separated at the beginning of the new series. Because you see, they’re in space, and romance has had to move to the backburner for awhile.

Fresh off the announcement that she had been made a series regular, Natalia Cordova-Buckley (Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez) was joined by her on screen love interest Henry Simmons (Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie) to discuss the dramatic conclusion to a tense story the characters survived in the back half of series 4, with Yo-Yo having to convince Mack to return to the real world. Of course, again, they’re in space (which Simmons reminded us of repeatedly) when we meet up with the characters again, so romance is not their main concern. Even if it might be for the fans.

According to Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May), and EP Jeph Loeb, May will have to deal with returning to a world where people have memories of interactions with her that she has no memory of, due to having been replaced by a Life Model Decoy (LMD). Of course, everyone wonders what that means for Philinda (the pairing of Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, and May). According to Wen? “Philinda is a dish best served hot.”

Last up were the dynamic duo of Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) and Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson), who discussed the possibility of a new Director of SHIELD, Miss Johnson herself. Gregg is on board, but Bennet isn’t so sure it’s something Daisy’s looking for. Though she does acknowledge that after years of hardship, she’s learned something about responsibility.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series 5 returns to US screens on 1st December.
