Punisher and Blade come home

Marvel regains the rights to the Punisher and Blade franchises.

There have been 3 Punisher movies and 3 Blade movies plus a Blade TV show, all with varying levels of sucess but the news just in is that Marvel have clawed back the rights. This means that Marvel could in theory incorporate them now into the film universe.

The terms of most of the deals appeared to be along the lines of if films or TV shows weren’t forthcoming in a period of time, then said rights would revert to Marvel. So, that’s why, for instance, Fox is looking at new takes on the Fantastic Four and Daredevil properties. If it doesn’t, the rights will go back to Marvel. And given that Marvel is owned by Disney these days, they’re not likely to be granted again.

Which brings us to Blade and The Punisher. Both of these characters have had three movies apiece now, but both have been off the big (and small) screen for some time. And now, Marvel Comics CEO, Joe Quesada, has confirmed that the rights have duly reverted back as a result.

I liked all the movies from both franchises, sure they had issues but hey who doesn’t.

Marvel has also been giving updates on their tv shows and maybe that is where Punisher could head to as a format it could work on a cable channel like HBO. If Walking Dead can work then Punisher can too.

Now all we need is for the Fantastic Four to revert back to Marvel and I will be very happy indeed.
