Film Review: Arthur (2011)

Greetings all Montoya here.

I know what you are thinking. Arthur is not the type of film that Geek Syndicate would cover but I say nay non believers, for this film does include the Batmobile, Darth Vader and the Deloren from Back to the Future (not to mention the Mystery Machine and the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard). So I think it can just squeeze in. What I am not going to do is refer in anyway to the original movie as this is it’s own beast. The movie is out on Friday.

Arthur, Russell Brand, is the near Billionaire who spends his days drinking, spending his money and having lots of fun. He is looked after by his nanny played by a amusing Helen Mirren on fine form. Arthur is told to marry Susan, Jenifer Garner, or lose his money. It then becomes complicated when Arthur meets Naomi an aspiring writer.

The film has a good sense of fun about it and the jokes are funny and sweet. This is a good role for Brand and he seems at home in this part. Mirren looks like she is having fun and Jenifer Garner plays against type as the evil scheming business woman. The one surprising role was that of Burt Johnson, Susan’s father. This was Nick Nolte in what I have to say is his worst performance in any film I have seen him in. The first time we meet him I could not understand a word he says and I actually thought he was drunk, maybe he should have played Arthur…

The best part about this film was Greta Gerwig who steals every scene she is in as Naomi. I instantly fell in love with her. She seems to be channelling a blond Zoey Deschenel which is no bad thing as far as I am concerned.

The backdrop of New York is put to great use and the other stars of the film, the aforementioned cars, steal the show.

Arthur is a film with a message and a humble journey that I urge you to take with him and you will be pleasantly surprised. I came out with a smile and hope you will too.
