Film Review: Insidious

Greetings all Montoya here

Insidious or Hideous?

“Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Bryne) have a happy family with three young children. When tragedy strikes their young son, Josh and Renai begin to experience things that science cannot explain.”
Not being a huge fan of modern horror I was only mildly interested in this movie made by the people who created the Saw franchise. How pleased am I that I was chosen to go along for this. It was a great popcorn supernatural bump and scares movie with a great sense of humour.

I genuinely jumped at most of the scares until I was expecting them. This then became a bit of ‘let me try and guess when the next one will be’ fun pastime. The filmmakers make great use of all the old school scare tactics and also using a baby monitor to good effect.
At first you start to think it is Poltergiest copy but then brings in a few surprises along the way. The story could have been straight  out of Supernatural and you were just waiting for the brothers Winchester to ride along in their Impaler. But instead we get a couple of Ghostbusters wannabes (writer Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson) who do a superb job of keeping the humour just right with both their wit and cool retro gadgets.

The cast all do a very capable job but a shout out to Lin Shayne in the role of head psychic/ghostbuster while looking like something out of a steampunk movie. Also nice to see the great Barbara Hershey back on the big screen.

There are lots of clues along the way in this film but I would not look to hard as it might spoil the fun.  A few twists are a must for any self respecting horror film and writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan do not disappoint.
The film is not perfect with what seems like a rushed ending and some of the effects are cheap but effective however this is pure popcorn fun and a great date movie.
