Ridley Scott Linked to The Martian

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott is in early talks to direct Matt Damon in a new science fiction film called The Martian. Described as an “outer space adventure” by 20th Century Fox, Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) was originally set to direct this film before he jumped ship for the new Spider-Man spin-off, Sinister Six.

Scott will also be a producer on the project, alongside Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood. The producers themselves sourced the book, self-published by Andy Weir, which features astronaut Mark Watney, one of the first people on Mars.

The story goes that a dust storm almost kills Watney and his crew abandon him. How can he possibly survive on Mars, with no way to signal home? Can his resourcefulness keep him alive? Apparently, the book is huge amongst the employees at NASA. Goddard, according to the Reporter, wrote the screenplay. For more about the book, visit Random House.

Ridley Scott is a very busy man. IMDB lists him as lined up as director of a forthcoming untitled Bladerunner film, and producer of as many as 9 future films and TV shows (including Prometheus 2), as well as all his numerous current projects – Exodus: Gods and Kings is in post-production.
