Robert Redford Confirmed as S.H.I.E.L.D Head

redford-shieldIs this a bid to get more grannies to go along to Marvel movies? Just kidding! 70’s & 80’s Hollywood heart-throb Robert Redford has confirmed he’ll be playing the head of SHIELD in the upcoming Marvel film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

During a press conference he stated “Well, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess. ”

Redford joins previous cast members Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), together with Avengers “regulars” Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and other newbies Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Frank Grillo (Crossbones) and Max Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to be largely based on the Captain America comic storyline of the same name, which revealed friend & sidekick Bucky Barnes didn’t die as expected during the war, but was instead brainwashed by the Russians (a la Manchurian Candidate)to serve as an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The film opens on April 4, 2014.
