SDCC 2012: Chatting with Bossa Studios, Creators of Merlin: The Game

When I first heard that there was going to be a Merlin game, I was a bit surprised. Not because I didn’t think it would be a good idea, but because it was coming during the show’s final season. Now that we know executive producers and creators Johnny Capps & Julian Murphy are in discussions for series 6, it doesn’t seem out-of-place at all! About the game, they said “Each step allows the player to become more immersed into a wider universe of Camelot; we are amazed at the attention to detail. Fans of the show are sure to love the opportunity to create and follow their own destinies!”

The game comes from BAFTA award winning Bossa Studios which aims to revolutionize social gaming by doing things with an edge. While in San Diego, I caught up with Creator-in-Chief Imre Jele who was incredibly fun to chat with and he spoke about how the idea for the game came to be, his favorite character to work on, and experiencing Comic-Con for the first time among other things. Behind the cut, you’ll find our interview as well as sketches, artwork,  the fantastic trailer showing some gameplay and more details on what you can expect:

Bossa Studios worked closely with the folks at Shine to ensure consistency between the game and the TV series which is a good thing as a point of concern was about whether players would follow Merlin’s journey like the show or if it would be more of a choose-your-own-adventure type game. My fears were allayed as the game is meant to be a compliment to the series, not a replica.

Merlin The Game introduces real-time gameplay and co-operative experiences where players will create their own avatars, choose Merlin or Arthur as mentors or opt for a mix of swords and sorcery. Upon arriving in Camelot, your character will fulfill various missions as well as leave the safety of the castle to complete quests given by Merlin and Arthur. Players will use deft swordsmanship and clever spells to defend themselves as well as team up with friends along the way.

Merlin: The Game will be released around the same time as the Merlin‘s fifth series première this fall. Sign up for the beta and find Merlin: The Game on Twitter or Facebook. Additionally, keep an eye out on Geek Syndicate as we’ll be giving away some Comic-Con exclusives from Merlin: The Game – which includes a chance to play the closed beta before the game’s release.
