SDCC 2012: Interviews with the Cast of Spartacus: War of the Damned

Liam McIntyre from Starz's Spartacus

It’s not often you will find a show with rising popularity to opt out of more seasons, but the Starz series Spartacus is doing just that; however, not without an ‘epic’ ending. Before the final Spartacus panel began, we were able to sit down with DeKnight, as well as stars Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Manu Bennett (Crixus) to discuss seasons past, shooting the new season, what it’s like to be turned into a video game, and more.

Though writer/creator Steven DeKnight admits he has not written that final episode yet, he told us how important it is for him to end it right. “One of the biggest challenges of the season is: how do you tell the story and not end it like, ‘Well, everybody you cared about was murdered and they lost and that’s that.’?” The final season, Spartacus: War of the Damned, starts in January 2013.

Liam was the first at our table, and as rough and tough and intimidating as Spartacus is, Liam is nearly the antithesis of that. He is always first to offer a warm smile, and seemed genuinely excited to be at Comic-Con talking about this job he is incontestably proud of. Despite being surrounded by press with cameras and recorders, and while undoubtedly still jet-lagged, Liam was calm and sat to chat with us as if he was at a table surrounded by old friends catching up. He tells us they are currently filming the fifth episode, which is just around the halfway point of the 13-episode season, and that there is already quite a lot of blood. Not surprised? Watch the full interview with Liam below (with a great moment at the end) and heed this advice:  “Don’t write a high school paper based on the show!”

Manu Bennett offered a bit of insight about how some of the characters have subtle changes but ultimately kind of come full circle, and where they are in the final season. The conversation also took a turn from the epic battles of Rome, to the battle that original Spartacus actor Andy Whitfield fought, and lost, with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Watch Manu speak about that and more below:

Next up was series writer & creator, Steven DeKnight, who chatted with us about some of the obstacles he is facing with this final season. He said everybody knows the history…and the outcome. “Whenever I talk about the ending people always whisper to me ‘You know, they never found his body!'” adding “This season [won’t be] all about the battles, it’s also about the emotions.” Watch below to find out why he compares the show to a famous sinking ship plus how writing is coming along for the finale:

While we still don’t know how the series will end, expect things to be different. We last spoke with Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who plays Naevia. She spoke about her character’s journey and what it was like going through bootcamp with the boys:

Unfortunately for Spartacus fans, we will be waiting until 2013 for not only Spartacus: War of the Damned to premiere, but also to get our hands on the Spartacus Legends video game. In the mean time you can pre-order the Spartacus: Vengeance DVD’s which will be released 11 September 2012 in the US and Canada, and 1 October 2012 in the UK.
