Marvel News Round-Up – Avengers, Dr Strange, Hulk & X-Men!

marvel-logo1 Whether it’s Fox, Sony or the Marvel stable themselves, the world-wide rumour mill is full of mutterings!

Avengers 2: so contrary to recent rumours Saoirse Ronan (fresh from Byzantium), was being ear-marked thee role of Scarlet Witch in Avengers Assemble sequel, the lady herself has cleared the air: “That’s not happening, no. I think that was just one of those little rumours floating about.”

Hulk 3: Mark Waid Indestructible Hulk series with artist Leinil Francis Yu is being touted as the source for the storyline for Marvel’s on/off third solo Hulk offering, to star Avengers Assemble star Mark Ruffalo as the Jolly Green Giant, off the back of  multi-picture deal he has with the studio. To date rumours had circulated around Planet Hulk or World War Hulk, but they have been viewed as required an enormous scale in budget & writing to base a screenplay. The Indestructible Hulk story flows much better from Avengers Assemble – the Hulk is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and as Bruce Banner feels the need to give back to society, he asks them for a lab where he can create inventions that will help society in exchange for letting S.H.I.E.L.D. strategically use the Hulk whenever needed. According to ComicBookMovie, “So why would this work on the big screen? First of all, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has openly said the key to another Hulk film is Ruffalo’s portrayal of Banner.”

Doctor Strange: well, if he won’t get the Robin / Nightwing / Dark Knight gig, it seems that Marvel may be prepared to give Joseph Gordon-Levitt a shot at being the lead for a Doctor Strange movie. Not often right, Latino Review have it that Marvel’s first choice for the role of sorcerer Stephen Strange would be Looper and The Dark Knight Rises star,  Joseph Gordon-Levitt… he gets my vote!

X-Men: Days Of Future Past: according to site Vulture, SDCC will see a sneak peek at the Bryan Singer-directed sequel/prequel, along with a dozen or so of the cast members on-stage. They also purport that Peter Dinklage will be confirmed as Sentinels creator Bolivar Trask, and Josh Helman will be revealed to be playing a younger Stryker, the character played by Brian Cox in X-Men 2 and Danny Huston in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. On top of that, Bryan Singer’s latest tweet from the set reveals that Lucas Till be returning as Havok. Vulture then goes on detail the plot: “In Singer’s take, Ellen Page returns as Kitty from the Brett Ratner–directed X-Men: The Last Stand, but this time she uses her powers to send Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine back into the past, where he encounters the younger mutants played by James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender, as per X-Men: First Class. However, Kitty suffers a mishap during the time-travel trance, and while Wolverine is still under her spell, the other X-Men must race to find a mutant who can siphon Kitty’s powers and bring their friend back to the future.”

AND, if all that wasn’t enough for you to ponder, 20th Century Fox have apparently registered the domain name for a possible X-Force movie – the ’90s X-Men spin-off that centred on a team led by Cyclops’ son – the time-travelling future warrior Cable. According to other sources, Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow is already involved, and X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner is to oversee the project. It has already been announced that two of the core X-Force team are already queued to appear in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past – the Native American tracker James ‘Warpath’ Proudstar, and the solar-powered Bobby ‘Sunspot’ DaCosta – and it’s easy to see how Cable can be easily integrated into the storyline given the film’s time travel plot. It seems that Marvel aren’t the only ones with a Phase 2 & 3 approach to the X-Men universe. It certainly seems they’re in for the long-haul!
