Launching this Thursday, May 3rd on Sky Channel 323, the new network will offer contemporary movies from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s – a new channel destination for film fans.

Geek Syndicate went along to launch of the Sony Movie Channel to see what the new channel was all about. I have to say I was impressed and that is hard to do these days with all the other movie channels out there. The Sony Movie Channel looks to be the place that lovers of movies will seek out to catch up on classic films and some great new ones. Sony Movie Channel currently broadcasts on Sky EPG 323 and +1 EPG 324 in the UK

I also have to give a shout out to the Sony Entertainment Television channel which has some great shows on it in case you have missed them which also includes Spooks from the very beginning which starts this week.

Kate Marsh, Senior Vice President of Broadcast & Channel Development for Sony Pictures Television, announcing the launch details, said: “We’re very excited to bring Sony Movie Channel to the UK, where we will be showcasing a wide variety of film genres every day. We know that audiences love great stories and our schedule of favourite movies will appeal to film fans of all tastes, looking for movie entertainment.”

Launch night will start at 5.30pm beginning with the Woody Allen comedy Manhattan Murder Mystery, featuring Diane Keaton and Anjelica Huston; followed by Tim Burton’s critically acclaimed Big Fish, starring Ewan McGregor; and sci-fi action Resident Evil: Extinction, starring Milla Jovovich.

Throughout launch month, ‘Movies at 10pm’ include Closer, Mona Lisa Smile, Suspect Zero and The Missing. ‘Action Mondays’ showcase the likes of Donnie Brasco, starring Johnny Depp and Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and every Friday there is a double-bill Friday-Feature starring some of Hollywood’s greatest including Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones.

As well as a daily line-up of quality films, Sony Movie Channel also brings its audience themed seasons of entertainment every month.

Kicking off with Thriller Season in May, film lovers can enjoy titles including Panic Room, starring Jodie Foster; family psychodrama Hush, with Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow along with paranoia mystery The Forgotten, with Julianne Moore.

SPT’s other Sony-branded UK channel, Sony Entertainment Television, launched in April 2011 and is carried on both Sky EPG 157 and Virgin EPG 193. The channel has grown exponentially since its launch and offers quality drama and comedy, including great British hits such as Hustle, The Tudors and Spooks; US comedies such as Community and Til Death; as well as compelling and engaging movies.
