Spartacus Cast Goes to Bootcamp

Now that filming for season three of Starz Network’s Spartacus has begun, it’s back to sword fighting (and skimpy outfits) for the cast. How do they prepare for the physicality of it? They go to Gladiator Boot Camp.

Read more about it and check out some pictures of the actors in action after the jump.

Prior to filming each season, the Spartacus actors and stunt performers get together for a month-long training program gets them into shape, but also plays an important role in helping to keep everyone safe during filming.

Overseen by Allan Poppleton, who is the show’s stunt coordinator, the bootcamp is intense but also crucial. “Meticulous choreographing is necessary to ensure the safety of the actors performing the stunts,” he says. “For four weeks, we work the cast to the point of exhaustion, combining cross training elements – everything from cardio, basic gymnastics, foot and movement work, unarmed combat, body awareness, reactions, weaponry and functional cross fit circuits.”

Not only is the training good for making sure everyone stays safe, it’s also an opportunity for the cast to spend time together before filming begins. “Lean and mean is the result required,” Poppleton says, “but it also helps form an amazing bond between myself, the actors and stunt performers.” This is especially important for new actors joining the cast, such as Simon Merrells, who will be playing Marcus Crassus.

While safety is the more practical benefit of working out hard for a month, many of the actors and actresses spend the filming months in very skimpy costumes. Looking good is definitely the name of the game – so says Liam McIntyre, who plays Spartacus. “Spartacus Boot Camps are famous now for pushing you to your absolute limits. This year they found a new level with military inspired training. I’ve never been so fit in my whole life. This boot camp will kick your ass. This year it kicked it twice.”

What’s next for the Spartacus gang? Gladiator Boot Camp – The DVD perhaps?

Season 3 of Spartacus is currently filming in New Zealand, and will air on Starz in January 2013.
