Star Wars 3D: No More for Now

Star-Wars-3D-re-releaseDamn – isn’t this just tragic news.  AintItCool News are reporting that Lucas film have decided to officially postpone the 3D releases of Attack of The Clones & Revenge Of The Sith due to (lack of interest?) “the focus on Star Wars Episode 7.”  Both re-releases were due later this year.

The official word from Lucas Film: “Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.”

Presumably this also means the 3D desecration of the original trilogy will also be shelved.

As well as the middling box office returns play a part, no doubt there’s more than a smidgen of inter-studio politics also factoring in with Disney now holding the Star Wars rights but with Fox holding the distribution rights to the originals & prequels through to 2020.

Personally, I can not express just how good a piece of news this is.  The Phantom Menace was bad enough in 2D, let alone an additional (pointless) retro fitted third dimension.  Let’s hope this stays this way for a long time to come.
