Star Wars Episode VII – Casting News Hits

Yesterday, the main cast of the forthcoming Star Wars movie directed by JJ Abrams was announced on the official web site for the franchise. The news accompanied a photograph of the cast along with the director, writer and producer.

Actually, more than the cast news, I was more interested to realise that Kasdan (who wrote the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and the story for the multi-media production Shadows of the Empire) has been involved with the writing alongside Abrams. This fills me with hope that some of that  classic feeling will remain in Abrams’ vision of the Star Wars galaxy.

I’m sure that news had already surfaced and I’ve just had my head in the proverbial sand though!

And here’s the announcement that accompanied the photograph:

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Alongside the principles from the original trilogy, a number of relative unknowns appear which to me is a good thing. I like to not have any pre-conceptions going into a movie about an actor or actress’s performance. An IMDB search reveals that alongside Andy Serkis (hopefully out of the  blue suit so we can see him properly!), I should recognise Domhnall Gleeson, who amongst other roles was one of the Weasley Brothers in the Harry Potter films.
