‘The Hobbit’ Could Become a Trilogy

It seems two films might not be enough to bring the story of The Hobbit, a single 300-page novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, to the big screen. It is currently being suggested by various sources that Peter Jackson may be seeking to add a third film adaptation to complete the story of Bilbo Baggins’ journey ‘there and back again’.

At Jackson’s Hobbit panel at Comic Con on 14th July, the director of all things Middle Earth first suggested his interest in shooting more footage. Since then, discussions among Jackson, Warner Bros., producer Fran Walsh, and writer-producer Philippa Boyens, regarding the possibility have been, and are currently, taking place.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Sources close to the production of The Hobbit say the filmmaker [Jackson] has concluded that he wants to turn his upcoming two-film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien epic into a trilogy. That would require additional shooting that sources say could take place next summer for about two months in New Zealand.”

A third Hobbit film will likely incorporate the content from the lengthy appendices found in later editions of the Lord of the Rings book trilogy. These appendices were said to include detailed notes towards a revised, expanded version of The Hobbit, with Tolkien’s intention of creating a closer tie of the children’s novel to the intense mythology found in his famous Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Currently, Warner Bros. is keen on the deal provided Jackson and co. can come to a mutually satisfactory financial and logistical arrangement. This would include extending the contracts of the cast, booking equipment, and dealing with any legal property rights wrangles associated with The Hobbit.

A source close to the production told the Hollywood Reporter, “If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon. It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is scheduled for theatrical release 14th December 2012, with the second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, due December 2013. Based on this annual release schedule, we could expect a third film to come to our screens sometime around December 2014.
