Tom Hiddleston in Talks to Star in The Crow Reboot

tomhIt seems Tom Hiddleston (Avengers) is in early discussions to play Eric Draven in a new reboot of The Crow. He recently had dinner with the producers, which must have gone well as he later went for a makeup test in London.

Based on the comic book series by James O’Barr, the role was made famous by the late Brandon Lee who played Eric Draven back in 1994. However the film was marred by Lee’s tragic death during the shooting of the movie.

The Crow follows Eric Draven a rock musician who is murdered along with his fiancée, by a group of marauding thugs who terrorize the decaying city in which they live. One year to the day after his death (which happens to be Devil’s Night), a mystical crow appears at Eric’s grave; Eric rises from the dead and, with the bird as his guide, goes on a mission to avenge himself against the leader of the gang who killed him.

There have since been three sequels (The Crow: City of Angels – 1996; The Crow: Salvation – 2000; and The Crow: Wicked Prayer – 2005), as well as a 1998 TV series called The Crow: Salvation.

There have actually been talks of a remake since 2008 when Stephen Norrington (Blade & The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) announced he was going to write and direct a new version. Since then the project has gone through various legal battles as well as a few directors and actors to play the lead. Now however it looks like the studios have set their sights on Hiddleston, with a new script written by Cliff Dorfman (Warrior) and a new director on board in the shape of F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall).

Like most people when I think of The Crow I think of Brandon Lee’s interpretation, so it will be interesting to see how the new version will be reimagined. Will Hiddleston be able to create his own style and bring it to the role that everyone associates with Lee’s first interpretation that was memorable for so many reasons.

With shooting believed to be starting this autumn, no doubt we shall soon see.
