Fighting Fantasy. Two words that perfectly describe the phenomenon of the 1980s and 1990s and to this day send a tingle down my spine. It has been a long time since the franchise has ventured into the realm of linear story-telling but that is set to change. Officially authorised, Steve Jackson’s The Trolltooth Wars is a graphic novel adaptation of the very first Fighting Fantasy novel. It is being funded through Kickstarter, so head on over and check it out.
In 1989, co-creator Steve Jackson published the first in a series of novels which delved into the rich world that had been created by the numerous adventure gamebooks that he and Ian Livingstone had pioneered. The Trolltooth Wars saw evil sorcerers at loggerheads. Balthus Dire and his army of Goblins and Orcs came head to head with Zharradan Marr’s undead hordes. Caught in the middle is the kingdom of Salamonis. It falls on the shoulders of Chadda Darkmane to find a way to end the war before it escalates too far.
Writer PJ Montgomery and artist Gavin Mitchell are putting together what looks like a superb adaptation of the novel. The story is one I always remember reading as a child – it was much darker than other fantasy novels I had read and even the common goblin seemed a menacing presence within those pages. This sense of darkness and grim story-telling is reflected in the adaptations art style.
The project has only just launched and the final product aims for publication in October this year. I’ve placed my pledge – now head on over and place yours. Whether you’re a fan of Fighting Fantasy specifically or fantasy as a whole, it won’t disappoint.
