TV REVIEW: The Big Bang Theory Season 5 Episode 13: The Recombination Hypothesis

On the spur of the moment, Leonard asks Penny out on a date. The girls are excited and the boys sceptical. Meanwhile, Sheldon gets some unintentional laughs while playing a card game.

It has been two years since Leonard and Penny broke up, and there are many fans of the show that hope the pair will resolve their issues and get back together. In this episode, it seems that they are taking steps in the right direction. Leonard and Penny go on a very cute date, where they decide to pretend it is a very first date to get rid of the awkwardness. Of course things progress from there, but in true Leonard and Penny fashion, the path of true love does not run smooth.

It is near the end of the episode that we learn Leonard has been over thinking things again. The whole episode is Leonard’s supposition of what will happen if he asks Penny out again, the situation does not end well, but Leonard goes ahead anyway. Penny gets her moment of imagination as well, but her imagination of what will happen is slightly more exteme than Leonard’s. Hurrah! Perhaps Leonard and Penny will actually get back together, although that would leave poor Raj as a gooseberry, but, who knows what will happen in time to come?

This week, Sheldon is very much in the background, but that does not mean that he does not have some classic lines. The best being “Live long and suck it, Zachary Quinto” – he’s not a fan of new Star Trek, obviously.

For too long in this season of The Big Bang Theory we have had stand-alone (and, let’s face it, mediocre) episodes that do not move the relationships between the characters forward. This week we had a treat, which implies that the season is winding to a great close.
