University Students Calculate Cost of Death Star

Finally some economists in the world have done something useful and answered that age old question. If I wanted to destroy Alderaan, roughly how much would that set me back?

I’ve been at University for a good few years now, but I have never been asked to do research into something newsworthy nor have I done anything newsworthy. But some economists from Lehigh University have perhaps created the most excitedly reported story of them all.

As with most economics it’s based on assumptions (although to be fair when making estimations about fictional objects there are going to be assumptions), and really it is fairly nonsense (it doesn’t take into account r&d, labour rates, technology, blah di blah di blah), however they have worked out that the cost of the steel alone would be roughly $852,000,000,000,000,000 (that’s around 13000 times the world’s gross domestic product).
