BLU-RAY REVIEW: Evil Dead 2

Evil_dead_2After the success of his first gory ‘video nasty’ The Evil Dead in 1981, Sam Raimi released Evil Dead II in 1987. This new version was funnier than its predecessor, containing over the top gore and the famous possessed hand scene. This amazing film is finally getting the Blu-Ray treatment, with tons of extras and new high-definition 1080P transfer.

A young man, named Ash, takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin in the woods where he plays back a professor’s tape recorded recitation of passages from the Book of the Dead. The spell calls up an evil force from the woods which turns Linda into a monstrous Deadite, and threatens to do the same to Ash. When the professor’s daughter and her entourage show up at the cabin, the night turns into a non-stop battle against a demon horde for their souls.

This film is in my top three favourite movies of all time, and I was amazed at how well the high-def transfer worked. True, this will never look like a brand new film, but the picture quality was brilliant in comparison to how it used to look.

The acting is brilliant, although Bruce Campbell’s Ash certainly steals the show, especially when he is having to fight against his own possessed hand – totally brilliant! Even though this is most definitely a comedy, don’t be completely fooled. It wouldn’t be an Evil Dead movie without buckets of gore and they certainly don’t scrimp here. But I think that is what makes the film even more brilliant: yes, it’s gory but it’s so over the top that it makes you laugh (or maybe that is just me)!

I really liked the extras, especially “Cabin Fever.” The make-up guys seemed to have had a great laugh making this movie and it was really interesting seeing all the thought and creation process behind such greats as “Possessed Henrietta.” The commentary was really interesting, entertaining and funny. To me, the extras and Blu-Ray upgrade make this film even more special, making me want to watch it even more.

So, if you have never seen this film before – and if you haven’t then shame on you and go stand in the corner! But now with this new Blu-Ray release stuffed full of juicy extras, you have no excuses. Make sure you get it – or I’ll swallow your soul!
