Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan. But that only prompts the scorned clan to send an assassin after her. And when Ananna faces him down one night, armed with magic she doesn’t really know how to use, she accidentally activates a curse binding them together.
To break the curse, Ananna and the assassin must complete three impossible tasks — all while grappling with evil wizards, floating islands, haughty manticores, runaway nobility, strange magic, and the growing romantic tension between them.
Ok, so you will probably shout at me for saying this, but I didn’t like Pirates of the Caribbean! Maybe I missed something or maybe I was looking for something that wasn’t there, but I just didn’t like it. So when I was asked to review a book about pirates, you can probably imagine that I was less than enthusiastic.
Well the phrase “Never judge a book by its cover” jumps right out at me and shows me how wrong you can be. Yes, this is a story about a pirate – a pirate called Ananna who escapes from an arranged marriage and then is hunted by an assassin. After accidentally activating a curse that binds them together, we follow their journey to try to break the curse. The story has plenty of elements that keep you wanting more – adventure, magic, interesting characters, danger, twists and of course the developing romance between Ananna and her assassin Naji. These characters that are so far from our own experience become people you can believe in and relate to and a story that you find yourself drawn into. I found myself immersed in their world, forgetting they were pirate and assassin, and willing them to succeed and fall in love.
I will not spoil the book by telling you what happens, and I thoroughly recommend that you read it yourself.
I loved this story and hope that you will too – I think it’s too late for me and Pirates of the Caribbean but more pirate stories – you bet!
Look out for the sequel The Pirate’s Wish coming in June 2013.
