COMIC REVIEW: Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray #1

FiveGhosts_CoverFive Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray is the story of Treasure Hunter Fabian Gray. He’s been possessed by five literary “ghosts”: The Archer, The Vampire, The Samurai, The Detective, and The Wizard. Fabian can access the unique of each ghost at will, greatly aiding him in his heists. Writer Frank Barbiere and artist Chris Mooneyham use some classic characters and an exciting story to show us one man battling his demons, both real and figurative.

We’re treated to treasure hunter Fabian Gray breaking into a secluded and highly defended castle using the powers of the Archer and Detective. There are Nazis guarding the treasure, but they’re no match for the Wizard, Vampire, and Samurai. After his heist, Fabian collects his reward, in more ways than one. After visiting a friend in London, Fabian’s ghosts act up, putting him in a short-lived coma. It’s after this that he ventures to Africa seeking a lost artifact and atonement for past sins. But, the waiting Spider Tribesmen have other plans.

Frank Barbiere takes a bit of pulp adventure, mixes in some action, a touch of the supernatural, a pinch of literary allusion, and mixes it all together to make a truly engaging story. The idea of five literary characters lending their abilities to a man is such an interesting thought. While we don’t yet know how Fabian became possessed by the five ghosts, it’s sure to be revealed later on.

Chris Mooneyham makes Five Ghosts look darn good. His action sequences are fantastic and his art instantly remind this reader of some Rocketeer stories. The art is great for the action, adventure, and pulp instances. Mooneyham’s art takes a cool idea and makes it into a fantastic story.

This first issue sets up what is sure to be an amazing story. It’s action-packed, fun, intriguing, visually appealing, and more. It’s what a good comic should be. If you need a new comic this week, make it this one.
