COMIC REVIEW: Rat Queens #6

Image comics brings us a new hilarious bloody chapter in the Rat Queens saga.

“THE FAR REACHING TENTACLES OF N’RYGOTH,” Part One A brand new booze-soaked arc of Rat Queens reveals a growing menace within the very walls of Palisade. And while Dee may have run from her past, the bloated, blood-feasting sky god N’rygoth never really lets his children stray too far.

You need this comic, seriously, this should be on your pull list. Rat Queens is one of our favourite series ever, because it has warrior women, swords, jokes about stone penises and buckets of blood.

This is the start of a new story arc so a perfect place to jump in if you’re a newbie (but we strongly suggest you invest in volume 1 Sass and Sorcery, just because it’s great). There’s a lot more delving into the back-story of the Queens this issue, we learn a bit more about Hanna’s troubled past and also glimpse a bit more of Sawyer’s too.

It ends on a hell of a cliffhanger, we have no idea what’s happened to one character in particular, but we smell a rescue mission coming up in the next few issues. Another Queen has a lot of explaining to do to the other girls when a face from her old life turns up.

Kurtis J. Weibe manages to mix humour with a lot of heart into Rat Queens. The jokes and little quirky exchanges have us roaring with laughter every single issue and this one is no exception. There’s a brilliant exchange between the girls about who pulled a certain orifice off the towns statue.

The artwork really compliments the writing brilliantly, Roc Upchurch is a really gifted artist with a great eye. His action sequences are really energetic and full of blood splatters. The action flows seamlessly from panel to panel and you get a real sense of the scrappiness of some of the fight scenes.

His characters convey real depth and emotion. His expressions are just divine to look at, you always know exactly how a line is delivered thanks to the look on that particular Queens face. Have we mentioned how good at gore he is already? The action is so brutal it makes us wince.

It really is wonderful to read a comic about women which focuses on friendship, and real friendships! They fight, drive each other nuts and really care about each other, which is what real friendships are like! We wish there was more of this in comics. The girls are also sexy and tough, because of their friendship and shared skill set. They also couldn’t care less what anyone thinks about their appearance or behaviour.

We really can’t recommend this series highly enough, we hope it goes on FOREVER! If you like your fantasy comics to have bite then invest in Rat Queens.
