COMIC REVIEW: Runners from Comix Tribe – A Vampire/Zombie survival horror

In this comic Steven Forbes and his fellow creator, artist Mac Radwanski are doing something I’ve only ever seen once before.  Taking the apocalyptic zombie meme and throwing vampires into the mix.  It should have been obvious; I mean what the hell are vampires going to eat if the humans die out, yet like I said, I’ve only seen it done once before.  That time it was done pretty damn well and this time is no different.

The comic opens as 2 women, the battle hardened Melinda and the bag of nerves Jennifer (personally, I’d leave her at home), are preparing to go on a run (hence the title) to grab supplies and follows the expedition and its aftermath.

The story sucked me right in from the word go and trust me these guys don’t waste a lot of time with set up. It’s straight into the action and the cliff hanger at the end promises a whole lot more.  The characters are nicely defined and the foreshadowing of tensions to come is quite nice. I did find some of the dialogue a little corny and overdone but not enough to draw me out of the story. There is a lovely line in there which acknowledges every geeks attitude towards zombies.  You’ll know it when you see it.

The artwork from is black and white with some beautifully clean pencils and very clear storytelling.  Vic Moya’s inks does wonders and adds a real sense of drama to the comics appearance.

In short I actually can’t wait to see what happens next.  If horror survival is your thing, this is definitely worth a read.  If you don’t believe me, you can check out a 10 page preview here – Runners Preview
