This exclusive graphic novel prequel to this summer’s blockbuster Star Trek movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, sees new characters and conflicts threaten Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise, in a story overseen by Star Trek movie writer/producer, Roberto Orci.

The story follows on from the end of events of the last Star Trek movie with Spock still trying to cope with the loss of Vulcan, and Kirk getting used to being the Captain. The crew are tasked with doing a ‘Scan and Run’ on the planet Phaedus – a civilisation who are not advanced enough to been seen by the crew. However whilst doing a scan, the Enterprise is hit by a weapon far too advanced for this race. Kirk, Spock and Sulu venture down to the planet to find out where it is coming from- going against the Prime Directive (like Kirk ever paid attention to that anyway!!) and what they discover may have far reaching consequences.

I’ll be honest I don’t read a huge amount of comics, but being a huge Star Trek fan I just couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into this. And I wasn’t disappointed, it was completely brilliant, the art was excellent and the story really drew me in. I was fully absorbed and totally ignored everything around me until I had finished this, and then just wanted to read it again.

As a sideline I read this after seeing the new movie Into Darkness and I think that made it extra brilliant. It really is a prequel to the movie – with little bits in the comic explaining plot lines in the movie, most notably Mudd’s ship.

Read this before the movie, or after it doesn’t matter just read it. It made this Star Trek fan very, very happy.
