DVD REVIEW: Dragons: Riders of Berk Part 1

dragons
Dragons: Riders of Berk is the follow up TV series to the film How to Train Your Dragon, a film I loved.  Coming to DVD on the 9th September the part 1 comes packed with 11 episodes and some special features.

I love How to Train Your Dragon, I thought it was a fun family movie with a great cast doing the voices.  So when I saw that they had made this into a cartoon series I thought it was a great idea.  The DVD comes on 2 discs and has 11 out of 20 of the first series.

Part 1 of the series keeps the same humour and adventure that the film had.  The series keeps the same cast as the film, Hiccup and his dragon Toothless being the main characters. However my favourite character is Astrid, played by America Ferrea (Ugly Betty) though in my opinion she is underused.

Each episode is self contained and comes with a kind of “moral to the story” which makes them nice to put on when I have my nephew round as he gets a who story in about 20 minutes.  However there are a couple of stories which span  two episodes, one on each disc. The animation quality is just as good as the film as sometimes I find the quality can slip a little.

Overall the episodes are fun and well written with enough comedy to keep parents entertained. The special features include a music video, explanation on how the creators came up with the new dragons for the series and a feature containing explanations of each of the dragons.

I really like the DVD though I wished it contained a whole series rather than just the first half.

It is released on the 9th September and is worth purchasing if you or your children were fans of the film.

GS Rating: 3/5 (4/5 if it contained the full series)
