DVD REVIEW: Supernatural Season 6 Volume One

The thrilling, terrifying and gripping adventures of the Winchester brothers continues as Supernatural: Season 6,Volume 1 comes to DVD from 29th August, 2011 courtesy of Warner Home Video.

Having spent six seasons battling every supernatural threat imaginable the journey of Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki –Friday The 13thTV’s Gilmore Girls, and Jensen Ackles – My Bloody Valentine, TV’s Smallville) reaches thrilling heights, following a truly apocalyptic climax in Season Five, with Sam imprisoned in Lucifer’s very own cage in Hell. One year later and Dean Winchester is still wandering the back roads of middle America, trying to piece his life together when his brother makes a surprise return.

With the brothers reunited, and rejoined by longtime friends Bobby (Jim Beaver – TV’s Harper’s Island and Deadwood) and fallen angel Castiel (Misha Collins – TV’s ER and 24), the team must establish what happened to Sam in Hell and prepare for yet another confrontation as a brand new threat rises..

So season 5 was all about Sam and Dean learning they were to be participants in the Apocalypse. Together, with the help of their friends Bobby and Castiel they managed to avert the end of the world and defeat destiny itself.

Sam sacrificed himself and ended imprisoned in the same cage as Lucifer and the Arch Angel Gabriel. Leaving Dean heartbroken and alone and forcing to pick up the pieces of his life.

A year later, his past catches up to him in the form of a Sam who has somehow been mysteriously freed from hell. Sam needs his brother to rejoin the fight because a new threat is rising in the dark corners and backwoods of America.

So the season 6 starts off with not just Sam back from the grave but also their Grandfather and other extended family members who until recently were dead.

In this season you see Sam and Dean become surrogate parents to a shapeshiting baby, Dean get turned into a vampire with a lot of Twilight references, they visit a town where everyone is being honest to each other causing a few suicides/murders, Along with other extraordinary adventures.

There is something seriously wrong with the newly risen from the dead Sam and it has Dean and bobby worries.

This season sees our heroes fighting dragons, skin walkers, vampires and the mother of all evil and everything else Hell has to throw at them.

I was very disappointed with the special features on this DVD as there were only outtakes for one episode, 2 episodes with audio commentary. There was however a documentary looking at Jensen Ackles debut at directing his first episode which I did enjoy.

Personally I thought this was one of the weaker seasons of Supernatural. They could of left it at the natural end that was Season 5. However Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are as entertaining and beautiful as always so it’s always nice to see them back together.
