Judge Dredd: Dark Justice Part One

After a 2 year absence, The Dark Judges are finally back and I’m not ashamed to admit that I got a little over excited when I found out.  I’ve been a Dredd fan for roughly 27 of my 34 years and the Dark Judges have always been a firm favourite of mine.

Written by Dredd’s co-creator John Wagner (A History of Violence) Dark Justice sees Judge Dredd and Judge Anderson again have to face the undead alien quartet from a twisted dimension, a dimension where just being alive is a crime.  Wager returns the Dark Judges firmly to their sci-fi horror roots, right where they belong.

This comic is absolutely stunning.  The artwork is utterly breathtaking but then with Greg Staples (Dredd, Sinister Dexter) fully painting the artwork (2 years it’s taken Staples to hand paint this 11-parter. 2 years), that’s hardly surprising.  Seriously, the attention to detail is just wonderful.  I’ve re-read part one about five times now and I keep finding tiny new details in the background of each panel.  It’s just exquisite.  If you’re familiar with Judge Dredd and Slaine at all, then you’ll know exactly how beautiful this comic is.

Judge Death has been missing for years now.  His ‘brothers’, Fear, Fire and Mortis, after a brief flirtation with freedom are back in confinement thanks to serial killer PJ Maybe (The Days of Chaos).  Who remembers when the anti-hero trapped the two escapees in wine bottles?  Now, four thousand very rich emigrants are boarding a ridiculously over-the-top and luxurious spaceship on an epic journey to find a better life somewhere else (See if you can spot the rather Branson like character in the first few panels).

But has anyone bothered to check the cargo being put aboard?  DUN DUN DUN…….

DJ still

If you’re a Dredd fan, you’ll love this.  If you’re a Dark Judges fan, you’ll love this.  If you’re a fan of Wagner and Staples’ work, you’re going to LOVE this.  I haven’t been this excited about a Dredd prog in years.

Welcome back Judge Death, Judge Fear, Judge Fire, and Judge Mortis.  I’ve misssssssed you.
