TV REVIEW: Misfits Series 2 – Episode 1

I was a huge fan of the 1st series of Misfits from the very first episode and as I took my seat in screen 1 at the BFI on Thursday night I tried not to let any anticipation I had interfere with my objectivity.

When we last saw the misfits, we were left with Nathan having discovered his power, which was immortality after he was buried. Apart from highlighting everyone’s worst nightmare of being buried alive, I thought this was a hell of a cliff hanger, leaving us with a little while to figure how they are going to get him out of there.

The misfits are led back to his graveside by a brand new, and regular cast member. The only problem is that we don’t know who he is. As you can see from the picture above a strange masked man is paying some close attention to our motley crew. Oh and he’s quite handy at parkour!

Once they are back together the fun starts all over again and major props to this episodes villain, Lucy, who is played by Evelyn Hoskins. Major major props to Ms Hoskins who scared the wee wee out of me, but when I met her in the bar afterwards was the sweetest girl you ever met. That’s some good acting chops.

The new probation officer doesn’t really give a monkey’s about his job and is hilarious because of it and the police investigation onto the missing probation officers is ramping up a little and you just know it’s going to cause problems for our heroes.
The episode maintains it’s fairly unique wastelandesque look and colouring, it’s filthy and inventive language and Nathan is as annoying as ever; although there are some really beautiful quiet and emotive scenes scattered throughout this episode.
This is a great start and bodes well and I have it from a couple of good sources that have seen the first 3 episodes, that each one is better than the last.

This is the only superhero based tv that bites at the moment and I’m loving it

Here’s the trailer for season 2 and if your a comic fan, you may recognise some artwork form Jock.

After the screening there was a Q&A with some of the crew and cast which was hosted by Jonathon Ross.

At one point Mr Ross mistook me for a ‘large lady’ (his words), which was fine!!! But a couple of the things that came out of that were:-

A confession from Misfits writer and creator Howard Overman, that there is a third series (although apparently he wasn’t supposed to mention that)

That Jonathon Ross had a pitched an episode to Howard and he was hoping Jonathon could write it.

There is bestiality of some sort in this series

Howard will find  away to keep them in their jump suits once their community service has ended

They have no interest in doing a misfits movie

Howard Overman has decided not to read any comics in order to avoid claims of plagiarism

The episode airs on E4 at 10pm on November 11th and you can find exclusive content at www.e4.com/misfits
