TV REVIEW: Agent Carter – The Iron Ceiling

Be warned that spoilers abound if you have not yet seen this episode.

Peggy Carter is here to kick ass, destroy the patriarchy and chew bubble gum.

And she’s all outta gum.

It’s time for The Commandos to Howl.

This is the episode I’ve been waiting for since Agent Carter started.  Don’t get me wrong, the I was eagerly anticipating the pilot episode, but since they started filming the show and releasing set stills, The Iron Ceiling is the episode that I’ve been most excited about.  I’m sure it’s no secret to anyone that has been tracking the show (but not watching), that this was the one that has the Howling Commandos in.  If that was still a secret for you then my apologies!

This week saw Peggy reunited with the Commandos whilst she’s with the SSR on mission into Russia.  It takes some harsh arguing with Dooley and a call to the Commandos, but Peggy refuses to budge and is on the plane with the rest of the guys.  When they meet up with the Commandos, we haven’t seen Peggy look that happy in a long time.  That’s due in no small part to finally being with people who know exactly what she’s capable of and who treat her like one of their own.  Dum Dum immediately defers to Peggy for instruction and a plan of attack and I think that’s why I love this episode so much.  The Commandos respect Peggy.  She fought alongside all of them AND Captain America during the war, went through what they went through so they know that she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty.  And considering that she was more or less their CO during that time, of course the Commandos will look to her for instructions.  It’s like a reflex reaction for them.  If Steve isn’t around then they look to Peggy.  And the more this series continues, the more I’ve come to realise that had Steve not been around when the SSR were looking for super solider test subjects, Peggy was right under their noses all along.  Someone pointed out that the other day that in the first Captain America film when Steve threw himself on top of the dummy grenade at the training camp, Peggy was actually rushing to do exactly the same thing, it’s just that Steve was closer.  That’s why I adore this show:  Peggy is everything that Steve was, it’s just that she has to work harder at it for people to see that.

Anyway, I digress.

Without giving too much away, The Iron Ceiling sees the Commandos and the SSR team up to head into Russia.  I mentioned in my last episode review that The Red Room will be featuring heavily in Agent Carter and this week’s episode is where that really kicks off.  And Peggy’s neighbour, Dottie Underwood is not all she seems.  Dottie’s true identity is not revealed, but I’m now convinced that she will turn out to be Yelena Belova, the other Black Widow.  If that’s the case, then that will be a brilliant tie in to Avengers: Age of Ultron as in the trailers for the film, it looks as though we’ll be getting some of Natasha’s back story.

The Iron Ceiling, for me, is the stand out episode of Agent Carter so far, and for a few of reasons.

Firstly, we get to see the Howling Commandos again.

Secondly, I can see some really good potential tie-ins to the rest of the MCU.

Thirdly and lastly, Peggy Carter is a gift to the MCU and to us all.  This episode is Peggy’s time to shine.  I think people often forget that she fought alongside Steve and the Commandos during the war.  She got stuck in, got her hands dirty and killed people.  So far during the series, Peggy has had to play the demure office girl who has been relegated to getting everyone’s lunches and taking their coffee orders.  This week, Peggy gets to give the middle fingers to all the misogynists in her office AND she gets to do with with the Howling Commandos backing her up every step of the way.  Peggy is not only respected in this episode, she is revered.  The Commandos are a pack and Peggy is their Alpha.  I’ve never been so proud of Peggy Carter than I was when I watched The Iron Ceiling.

Peggy Carter is here to kick ass, destroy the patriarchy and chew bubble gum.

And she’s all outta gum.
