TV REVIEW: The Originals Episode 1.10 – “The Casket Girls”

The Originals starts 2014 off with a bang with  a strong return from the mid-season break. The battles lines have been drawn – who will come out on top?

I really enjoyed this episode for a few reasons, but primarily because it looks like we’re going to start seeing more than just Klaus vs. Marcel, or Klaus vs…well, pretty much everyone. The pieces are all in motion, and it looks like Klaus might be in for more than he bargained for.

Klaus, Elijah, and Marcel have formed an uneasy alliance to try and find Davina. Klaus spends much of the episode being Klaus, but Elijah and Marcel are surprised to find that they might have something in common. Together, they work to ensure that Klaus doesn’t go too far – something he is definitely not pleased about.

Davina, the powerful young witch in question, is still very angry with Marcel for lying to her (remember, he was keeping her safe from the Harvest ritual, but neglected to inform her that the last witchy elder who could perform the ritual was dead). She frees Cami of all Klaus’s compulsions, but upon discovering that the witches are looking for her again (see below), she formulates a plan to escape the Big Easy with Cami and Josh. When Klaus messes it all up for her, she gets help from an unexpected source – Rebekah.

Sophie Deveraux, meanwhile, appears to have given up completely, until she discovers that Davina is no longer under Marcel’s protection. In order to complete the Harvest ritual now, she has to consecrate the remains of a powerful witch. She asks Hayley for help, telling her that it was the Deveraux bloodline that cursed her wolfie ancestors – if she helps, Sophie will lift the curse. The only problem is, she has to betray Elijah to do so.

The episode really set the scene well for the remainder of the season. With this bunch, no one is ever 100% on anyone’s side, but I am really looking forward to seeing Rebekah and Davina vs. Klaus. Davina kicked some serious butt in this episode, and she’s going to continue to be an important piece of the puzzle going forward. And isn’t it about time that Rebekah stood her ground? In the past, her desire for family and togetherness has been her downfall. It remains to be seen whether she’ll be able to keep this up, but I am rooting for her.

Oh Hayley – what have you done?? This twist complicates things in a really fun way. If you’re pulling for Hayley and Elijah to get together (which I kind of am), the you-know-what is going to hit the fan when Elijah finds out what she’s done. He’s spent a long time being betrayed by his brother. I doubt he’ll take too kindly to this. Then again, he might just understand…

Finally, I feel the need to call out Steven Kreuger’s performance as Josh, the gay club kid turned vampire who’s really taken a shine to Davina, and vice versa. He’s completely hilarious, getting all the best one liners and provided some much needed (at times) comic relief. He’s also unfailingly loyal and has proved to be a good friend to those around him. Really looking forward to seeing more out of him.
