TV REVIEW: The Originals Episode 1.11 – “Après Moi, Le Déluge”

A bit of a slow one this week, but it definitely set the stage for the next challenge the Originals are going to have to face.

Because Davina is still holding power that was simply meant to pass through her during the Harvest Ritual, her body is suffering for it. She is dying, but the supernatural nature of her sickness threatens to bring all of New Orleans down with her. The Originals decide that the ritual must go forward, but Marcel resists.

To complete the ritual, they still need a powerful witch. Sophie attempts to consecrate Celeste’s remains, but there is no magic left in her bones. Elijah, there to pay his last respects, reveals that there is yet another powerful witch who’s never been buried – their mother. Convenient, no? Together, he and his siblings (and Hayley) bury her and complete the consecration so that the ritual can go forward.

Marcel does his best to hide Davina, but in the end she makes the decision to sacrifice herself to save the city. Something goes wrong during the ritual, however, and the girls are not resurrected. This leads Rebekah to question where the power has gone. We discover that one of the other witches, Sabine, now holds the power and uses it to resurrect three witches. She reveals to them that her real name is Celeste.

An interesting episode, if only for the fact that it explained why Davina was having premonitions about Celeste. Sabine/Celeste is clearly the one to watch going forward – definitely a surprise, as she’s been a marginal character thus far. A great strategy, though, for an ancient powerful witch who wants to hide that she’s returned. I can’t wait to see which friends she’s brought back with her, and what havoc they’re going to wreak on the Big Easy.

This was a rare episode in that the Original siblings all managed to be on the same side for once. Plotting against each other took a back seat to saving the city they all love. It never fails to surprise me when Klaus reveals his more sensitive side – it was really on display this week in poignant scenes with Hayley, Rebekah, and Marcel. The Marcel scene was especially good, with Klaus comforting his friend(?) after Davina’s death. It will be interesting to see how seeing this side of him affects everyone’s plans going forward.

Now that the Originals are back in the same camp (mostly), we can turn our attention to the next foe. I get the feeling they’ll really have to stick together to survive.
