TV REVIEW: The Originals Episode 1.15 – “Le Grand Guignol”

Another incredibly tense episode of The Originals this week – this show just keeps getting better and better.

Elijah calls upon Cami to care for Klaus after the dagger is removed. As he’s recovering, Klaus tells her the story of Rebekah’s betrayal, and we get to see it all via flashbacks. Cami counsels him to forgive his sister, lest he become exactly like his father – hunting and terrorizing his own blood. As is to be expected, he doesn’t listen to her.

Hayley and the other wolves have Sabine tied up in the forest. Hayley reveals that she wants Sabine to lift the curse against her family, and Celeste agrees. When Elijah shows up and calls her trustworthiness into question, Celeste reveals that giving Hayley what she wants will cause Elijah to lose her. Also, his trip to the bayou had the added benefit of distracting him from realizing that Rebekah and Marcel didn’t leave New Orleans after all.

It all comes to a head in the cemetery, where Marcel and Rebekah have come to get Davina’s body. Elijah is there with Celeste, and he discovers that she has cast a boundary spell trapping the Originals inside. But Elijah’s got another trick up his sleeve, and it helps him finally get rid of Celeste for good.

The episode ends in a stand-off between Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah.

This show has become everything that The Vampire Diaries used to be. It’s always tense, always surprising, and there’s not a single wasted moment.

Reliving Rebekah’s betrayal through the flashbacks was especially powerful, because it really brought to light exactly how much she destroyed. It looked like the family was finally settling – they were happy, Klaus finally acknowledged and gave his blessing to her relationship with Marcel, and it all came crashing down with Mikael’s return. Now that we know, it’s hard to feel sympathetic toward her (much as I want to).

I love Klaus’s relationship with Cami. She’s spent a lot of time under Klaus’s compulsion this season, but even now she’s the only person who can really draw him out of his shell. She’s also one of the few people who can get through to him, even though she didn’t succeed this time. It’s because she sees the good in him and chooses to focus on that, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what his own family does.

Good riddance, Celeste. You had a lot of badass potential, until you let a pregnant werewolf get the best of you. And nobody messes with Elijah and gets away with it! It was sad to see him have to choose Hayley’s happiness over his own, but there was no other outcome that would be believable. Of course he would make that choice – he is forever sacrificing his own happiness for those around him.

Now the question is…will all three Originals make it out of next week alive?
