TV REVIEW: The Almighty Johnsons Season 2 Episode 5 – A Damn Fine Woman

When Axl sleeps in a dress after an eventful party, he discovers some new powers that come with being Odin.

After the dark couple of episodes we have had lately, it is great to see The Almighty Johnsons remember that the show is capable of being quite a lot of fun. Axl sleeps in a dress and a wig after some sort of elaborate party, and wakes up a woman. It takes him some time to convince Zeb – and later his brothers – that he is Axl, and then even longer for him to convince them to stop staring at his legs/bum/boobs etc. This twist in the show is rather funny, and definitely a change of pace from the dark and twisted Ty storyline, but what does this gender switch mean?

Well, it seems as though Axl is on the road to becoming Odin, but first must learn what it is like to be a woman, and how the women in his life feel about the way he has treated them. Gaia, under the influence of a bottle of wine, opens up to the female Axl. From here, Axl goes on an emotional journey, and learns the effect that his actions have had on the people in his life. It is said that Odin would switch genders in order to spy, and as well as learning more about the people around him, Axl also learns that Dawn believes Ty to be a killer.

Thankfully, the people behind The Almighty Johnsons made the choice to actually have a woman play the female version of Axl, and not just have Emmet Skilton running around in drag for the episode. This light episode – albeit with darker undertones, and a surprising resolution – is just what we needed after Ty’s tragic story. This was a clever move by the writers to not only get the show back on track and lead Axl closer to his destiny as Odin, but remind the audience that the show is also stupendously silly and rather fun.

In all, this was a fun episode of The Almighty Johnsons, which reminded us of how much fun the show can be. As well as this, we got back on track with the quest for Axl’s godhood and some of the gods got closer together. This may have taken a little too long, and gone a strange route through the episode, but for the most part, it was well done and fun. Although Zeb asking female Axl to take his virginity may have been just a step too weird for the show…
