TV REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 9 – Homecoming

In the mid-season finale, Klaus returns to Mystic Falls with a bang, while the unlikeliest of parties unite to plot his demise…or do they?  Caution: Contains Spoilers.

Let me preface this review by saying that the only reason I am not giving this episode a 5/5 rating is because I am annoyed that I have to wait until January for more.

I don’t want to give a summary of the entire episode, because it is too good to be entirely spoiled, so I will do a quick run down.  Michael is dead, Klaus is not.  Stefan is free of his forced servitude to Klaus, and it turns out that Elena was correct about what would give Stefan his humanity back.  But now that Stefan is free of Klaus’s compulsion, he wants revenge, and he gets it by going after the one thing Klaus cares about: his family.

I thought that this was a fantastic episode, and a great way to end the first half of the season.  Full of twists and turns, it felt almost like a game of “Clue.”  While everyone was technically working together to defeat Klaus, no one could really trust anyone to keep their word.

The writers have always been good at showcasing the depth and complexity of the characters.  Klaus is a baddie – yet the moment when he frees Stefan from his compulsion, when he calls him “friend,” is actually quite touching.  Rebekah’s emotional confession to Elena made Elena’s subsequent actions all the more shocking.  And not least of all, Katherine showed that she hasn’t entirely given up her humanity.

But all twists and turns aside, this episode reminds us that this show is really about the relationship between Stefan and Damon.  Elena predicted that it would be Stefan’s love for Damon that would save him, and she was right.  When Katherine told him that Klaus’s death would in turn bring about Damon’s, Stefan had to choice to to keep Damon from killing Klaus, no matter the consequences.

I am glad to see that Stefan has turned his attentions to Klaus – while I always liked the kinder, gentler Stefan, I have really been enjoying his run as bad guy this season.  Hopefully, there will be much more of that come January.
