First look at the new Phantom in costume…hmmm

A love the old pulp heroes  like The Phantom, The Shadow, Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer and Doc Savage. What I don’t like is the idea that to make them palatable for today’s viewers they have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern day.

I know a lot of folks didn’t like the Phantom movie starring Billy Zane but I loved it. It was just good old-fashioned pulp fun.  Sure it wasn’t going to win any awards for plot or acting but I had fun watching it and sometimes that’s all I’m after. I mean who doesn’t love a dude (with a wolf sidekick) jumping from a crashing biplane onto his trusty horse…pure pulp fun.

The SyFy’s modern spin on Flash Gordon was probably about as wrong as you can get so I really hope their modern-day take on the Phantom isn’t going to go the same way.

What I’ve seen of it so far has me worried. Here’s  synopsis for the plot.

Young urban daredevil Kit Walker finds himself recruited by a secret organization, unveiling a heritage he never could have dreamed possible. Revered as the twenty-first “ghost who walks,” he must now uphold and honor his ancestors’ creed-to fight crime and injustice throughout the world. But it’s a new world out there, and going up against high-tech savvy criminals will take training and discipline unlike anything bestowed on the Phantom.

Young urban daredevil…I’m not going near that sentence. Here’s the look at the modern day phantom in his full garb (this image is the property of the Phantomsite)

I’m not saying a word about his new look…not one.

Please don’t let this be another Flash Gordon.

Anyway here’s the trailer alongside the trailer for the more traditional take on the Phantom. I’ll leave you to decide which one looks more like fun.

  2. Nope, not happy about this. Sorry don’t wanna be negative but no, not now, not ever. Bring back the purple spandex.
