Sam Mendes for Frankenstein TV Series?

sammendesSeems that the next literary classic to become all the rage is Frankenstein. According to Deadline, Showtime has contracted director Sam Mendes and writer Sam Logan to adapt the Mary Shelly novel for their network.

The duo recently collaborated on the wildly successful Skyfall, but both have long histories in stage and screen production.

From Deadline:

The untitled drama, which has undergone some tweaking from the original spec to tailor it to the Showtime audiences, is described as a psychological horror drama series with literary underpinnings, including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, set in the 1800s. This would mark both Logan and Mendes’ series debut. They are executive producing the show with Pippa Harris, Mendes’ partner at Neal Street Prods.

This is interesting, if for no other reason than it implies a period piece, rather than a contemporary “re-imagining”.  There’s also a couple more Frankenstein projects in the works for US telly, so expect to see a fair bit of the Doctor and his Monster in the next couple of years.
