As you folks who listen to the podcast will know not too long ago I interviewed Amanda where she talked about the charity she had helped to form called ‘Sanctuary for Kids’.

I’m happy to put this press release which shows how successful the charity has been in such a short space of time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

First online auction supporting new not-for-profit organization SANCTUARY FOR KIDS is resounding success with sci-fi fans

Sanctuary for Kids, founded by Actor/Executive Producer Amanda Tapping, raises over $42,000 for children’s charities in its first month

Vancouver, BC – The recently launched not-for-profit organization Sanctuary for Kids is pleased to announce impressive results from its first charity auction and fundraising efforts which have raised over $42,000 in its first month. Founded by Actor and Executive Producer Amanda Tapping, along with Co-Directors Jill Bodie and Damian Kindler, Sanctuary for Kids (S4K) also received added support from the AT4 Convention attended recently by Tapping in the UK. 100% of the funds raised will go directly to Sanctuary for Kids supporting international and local charities for children in crisis.

Fans from around the world bid on unique experience-based items including a set visit to the Vancouver-shot series Sanctuary as well as lunch with Tapping at the studio. Also up for bids was the opportunity to name a character in an upcoming episode, and a Skype chat with the series’ Creator/ Writer / Executive Producer (Damian Kindler), Director/ Executive Producer (Martin Wood) and Tapping herself.

Just last week at the AT4 Convention in the UK, presented by GABIT Events, the fans showed their generous spirit and love for Tapping which translated into more than $28,000 for Sanctuary for Kids. A highlight of the convention was when Tapping’s former Stargate SG-1 co-star and friend, Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate SG-1, MacGyver), made a surprise phone call to her on stage pledging his support of Sanctuary for Kids. The fans were awestruck when Anderson also offered up a personal call from him to the highest bidder and donated other memorabilia from the Stargate franchise to support the cause.

Four lucky fans won a raffle to sit down and chat with Tapping over coffee. Others got into the mood of the event by passing a hat around to contribute while Tapping, always good natured and responsive to her fans, agreed to show off her baton twirling skills for the excited crowd. One of AT4’s organizers donated proceeds from the sale of her own book to the organization. And not wanting the wave of generosity to stop, many big-hearted convention-goers even started donating their own treasured memorabilia and autographed items to the auction so more funds could be raised for the foundation.

“Our fans never cease to amaze me with their generosity,” said a grateful Amanda Tapping at the close of the online auction. “The sci-fi community is endlessly enthusiastic and really gets behind projects they believe in. My heart is full from all their kindness and this is only our first auction! We cannot thank the fans enough for their amazing support of Sanctuary for Kids so far. And I know from experience…they’re just getting warmed up!”

“I am so pleased with how our first auction was received. And we’d like to sincerely thank GABIT Events who went above and beyond to help us raise funds and awareness at their convention,” continued Jill Bodie, Director, Sanctuary for Kids. “We’ve really been overwhelmed by the positive response to the foundation since we launched just under a month ago. I can hardly wait to see all this generosity translates into real change for the children’s charities we are supporting.”

Fans and supporters of S4K are encouraged to help spread the word about the foundation as well as get creative about their own fundraising initiatives.

Sanctuary for Kids has chosen the Nepal Orphans Home and Watari’s TTIP (Transitioning to Independence Program) and TIPPY (Transitioning to Independence Program for Parenting Youth) Programs to launch the foundation. The Nepal Orphans Home (www.nepalorphanshome.org) attends to the welfare of children in Nepal who are orphaned, abandoned or not supported by their parents. Watari’s Programs (www.watari.org) work with the homeless youth population in Vancouver to help stabilize single, pregnant and parenting youth in safe, affordable housing and encourages commitment to their treatment plans.

Sanctuary for Kids was founded by Amanda Tapping (Lead Actor and Executive Producer, Sanctuary), Jill Bodie (B.ED., M.S.W.) and Damian Kindler (Executive Producer and Creator, Sanctuary). All three serve as Directors for the foundation. In order to enable 100% of the funds raised to go to the children’s charities, Bodie is donating all of her time and resource costs as administrator for the foundation and Tapping and Kindler are personally covering all administrative and start-up costs.
